Decarbonising copper means transforming the whole value chain

Meeting environmental targets requires new thinking across copper production, recycling and winding wire manufacturing.

Copper sits at the centre of the energy transition. It is fundamental to transformers, electric motors, generators, renewable energy infrastructure and power networks, making it one of the most important materials supporting electrification. 

As demand continues to grow, attention is shifting beyond securing supply to reducing the environmental impact of how copper is produced and processed. For manufacturers of winding wire and other electrical components, decarbonisation is becoming a value chain challenge rather than a manufacturing challenge alone.  

Meeting future environmental requirements will depend on balancing primary production, recycled material and transparent lifecycle data while ensuring copper continues to meet the demanding performance standards required across electrical manufacturing. 

Copper is strategic for the energy transition 

Although copper is not classified as a critical raw material because of its relatively low supply risk, it has become strategically important to Europe's industrial future. 

Its role across electrification, renewable energy and digital infrastructure has placed copper firmly at the centre of discussions around industrial resilience and sustainable manufacturing. As demand accelerates, manufacturers are increasingly expected to demonstrate not only product quality but also the environmental performance of the materials they source. 

This is driving greater collaboration across the copper value chain, with initiatives focused on responsible production, certification and lifecycle transparency helping customers make more informed procurement decisions.  

Recycling is essential but not sufficient 

Copper is one of the world's most recyclable materials, and recycled material already plays a major role in European production. 

However, recycling alone cannot satisfy future demand. 

The availability of copper scrap is limited by the long operational life of electrical products, meaning much of the material currently in service will not return to the supply chain for decades. Even with strong recycling rates, primary copper production will remain essential to support continued growth across electrification. 

Making the most effective use of recycled material is therefore becoming increasingly important. Rather than directing high quality scrap into every application, manufacturers are exploring where recycled copper can deliver the greatest environmental benefit while preserving high purity material for demanding applications such as winding wire.  

Decarbonisation starts long before manufacturing 

Reducing the carbon footprint of copper requires action across every stage of production. 

Mining, smelting and refining remain major sources of emissions, creating opportunities to improve environmental performance through electrified equipment, greater energy efficiency, low carbon electricity and alternative fuels such as hydrogen. 

At the same time, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on lifecycle assessment, allowing customers to understand the environmental impact associated with different production routes and sourcing decisions. 

This broader perspective recognises that meaningful carbon reduction depends on improving the entire value chain rather than focusing solely on the final manufacturing process.  

Transparency will shape future procurement 

As sustainability requirements become more detailed, environmental data is becoming as important as material specifications. 

Manufacturers, suppliers and customers increasingly require consistent methods for measuring and reporting product impacts. Standardised lifecycle data and product category rules allow organisations to compare materials more accurately and make procurement decisions based on verified environmental information rather than assumptions. 

For winding wire manufacturers, this creates an opportunity to demonstrate both technical performance and environmental responsibility while supporting customers' own sustainability objectives.  

Copper has always been one of the industry's most important materials. Increasingly, it is also becoming one of its most closely examined.
