A new motor design without permanent magnets could reshape industrial applications.
Electric motors have relied on the same fundamental principle for more than a century: using magnetic fields to generate torque. Now, one company is taking a different approach that could reduce reliance on both rare earth magnets and copper.
US company C-Motive Technologies has selected Richardson Electronics as its manufacturing partner as it prepares its ZeroMag® electrostatic motor for commercial production, planned for 2027. The agreement covers engineering support, pilot production, quality planning and manufacturing, marking an important step from prototype development towards commercial deployment.
Unlike conventional electric motors, ZeroMag technology uses electrostatic forces instead of permanent magnets to generate torque. According to C-Motive, the design removes the need for rare earth magnets while also significantly reducing copper content. The first commercial applications are expected to focus on stationary industrial equipment, including conveyor systems and high volume, low speed fans, where reducing material costs and supply chain risk could offer a competitive advantage.
While the technology is still at an early stage, it highlights how manufacturers are exploring alternative motor architectures as material availability becomes an increasingly important design consideration. Rising demand for electrification, combined with ongoing uncertainty around rare earth supply chains, is encouraging the industry to rethink how electric motors are designed and manufactured.
For motor manufacturers, the question is not whether electrostatic motors will replace conventional electromagnetic machines. Instead, it is where they may offer advantages. If the technology proves commercially viable, it could create new opportunities in applications where lower material usage, simplified supply chains and reduced operating costs outweigh the need for traditional motor designs.
