Low Cost Magnetless Motors Without Power Density and Performance Compromises
The majority of electric motors today rely on rare-earth permanent magnets. They are the closest thing to free energy but at the cost of expensive materials, supply chain dependence on China, and long-term resource constraints.
Magnetless alternatives such as electrically excited synchronous motors (EESMs) have seen limited adoption in automotive, held back by complex manufacturing, lower performance, the need for specialised power electronics, and minimal cost advantage over permanent magnet motors.
We have developed the Unified Excitation Synchronous Motor (UESM), a new architecture that removes these trade-offs. UESM exceeds the performance of permanent magnet motors, operates using standard 3-phase inverters, and enables cost reductions of up-to 70%.
