Unlocking the Future of Copper: Supply Security, Recycled Content, and Sustainability
Copper is a strategic raw material for the energy transition. This session will answer some key questions, that are crucial for the sector:
How secure is the supply of copper in Europe? Can recycled copper be used in motors and transformers? Why is high recycled content not a silver bullet for procurement managers? What are the most realistic sustainability requirements in tenders? What are the levers for the decarbonisation of copper supplies?
The presentation will focus on copper's role as a strategic raw material for the energy transition, particularly in transformers and motors:
- Copper has a low supply risk within the EU, thanks to a strong and diversified value chain, with the European industry investing in increased mining, refining, processing, and recycling under the Critical Raw Materials Act.
- Progress in copper decarbonisation will be discussed, including an analysis of carbon emissions and key decarbonisation strategies
- For procurement managers, copper's recyclability without property loss is a key advantage for the circular economy, though both mined and recycled copper will be needed to meet growing demand. Ongoing improvements in climate and ESG credentials are encouraged.
