With the fast move into vehicle electrification, automotive OEMs and traction motor suppliers are pushing the limits of electric machine design. Due to the increasing demand that comes with the trend towards e-mobility, e-motors have to be more efficient and be brought to market faster and at less costs. Therefore, the best compromise between performance, manufacturability, and cost must be found for each electric drive.

Getting more power density and using less rare-earth magnets to decrease risks in the supply chain, increase sustainability and to reduce overall costs are only two of the typical challenges motor designers have to face. Numerical approaches such as shape or topology optimization are becoming state of the art to address those challenges. New motor structures and manufacturing technologies incl. additive manufacturing or disruptive cooling concepts are also playing an increasingly important role in developing and building the next generation of e-motors.
